Moderate attempt by Sundar C

Nearly after a span of 4 years, Sundar C is back again with a core-to-the-commercial film that keeps the audiences intact.Laced with comedy, romance, glamour, emotions and actions, Sundar C has interwoven the ingredients together and strikes with the same impact of ‘Thalainagaram’.Although the film’s main plot and characterizations are replicated from Hollywood film ‘Carlito’s Way’ that had Hollywood’s superstars Al Pacino & Sean Penn in lead roles. However, he has added the touch of South Indian flavors to cater the tastes.

The film opens with Selvam (Sundar C) undergoing severe treatment in operation theatre and there begins a flashback with voiceover. Selvam, a hardcore criminal released from prison decides to lead a fresh ‘n’ clean life. His close friend Sakkarapandi (Bose Venkat) helps him out on his decision. As a token of expressing his thankfulness to Selvam for getting behind bars for the crime, his boss Bhai (Srinivasan) offers a job in Hyderabad. There he comes across a beautiful dancer named Bharathi (Anuya). Sooner they fall in love and decide to get married. But things don’t happen as Selvam envisaged.

Trim looks, controlled acting, well expressed emotions – Sundar emotes with right gesture in every scene. Naturally these quotients were completely absent in his films after ‘Thalainagaram’.
He has even avoided the exaggerated romantic factors. Anuya has played a perfect role. Her dynamisms are the biggest assets. But why unwanted hype for the lip lock was sensationalized as it isn’t really off a great depth. Vadivelu keeps us amused with laughter-riot, but most of them are off parallel track. But don’t expect the same mega-fun fiesta from this duo as in was ‘Thalainagaram’. Bose Venkat does justice to his role while G Srinivasan lives under the skin of his characterization.

Musical score by Thamman is mediocre as couple of songs is feet-tapping. Cinematography with rich grading offers good visuals while editing is same as in other commercial action movies with rapid cuts. Stunt choreography has been done with accordance to the image of Sundar C.

On the flip side, it may be a disinteresting movie for those who have already watched the Hollywood movie ‘Carlito’s Way’ as the narrative style is still the same. Nonetheless chances are very less for the normal audiences for have watched this flick. The first half is blended with more fun, action and romance but as story shifts to the second hour gets more serious and somewhat dragging as well.

‘Nagaram’ will surely make a good business at box office for the next weeks. Word of mouth publicity and a good promotional campaign will help for good results in next few days.
