Providing an emotional drama laced with commercial elements, director Sasi gets to score brownie points with his latest release ‘Pichaikkaran’. Music director-turned-actor Vijay Antony has been striking gold with best scripts and it has been evident with his past three movies based on different genres. This one has a commercial touch with best moments including powerful characterizations and touching dialogues, which becomes the most prominent feature in this movie.
Vijay Antony plays the role of a rich man and only heir to the billion worthy property of his widowed mother. On his return from foreign country after completing his studies, his mother hands over the business to him. With everything getting perfect in life, everything changes topsy-turvy when his mother is hit by an accident in the industry pushed towards pathetic condition of coma. With doctors not completely sure about her amelioration, the hopes are fading and it is when a God man appears before Vijay Antony with a penance to perform, so that situations would get better for him.
Filmmaker Sasi is always far-famed for crafting scripts that holds emotions and relationships are the main core. In this film, it has the right mix of such elements, which keeps the family audiences so much attached towards the 130-minute drama. It doesn’t prolong with just emotions, but has a perfect drama of comedy, decent love and mass action sequences as well. The running length is short and doesn’t take you too dragging anywhere. The dialogues involving witticism are worthy of appreciations, which includes a beggar say, “Mudhala clients picchai edukka vidanum. Ulla Pogumbodhu disturb panna kudaadhu. Veliya vandha piragu. Namma Picchai Kekkanum,” and even the emotional ones like, “Nambikkaiyoda balame mulusa nambarudhu..” The dialogues encompass more prominence to the drama. The screenplay involving emotions, romance, action and comedy spread out in equal proportions keep us engrossed without any distractions. Characterizations are the other biggest plus in this movie, where even the miniscule roles are given complete delineation. Musical score by Vijay Antony is more impressive. Since the songs are montages, there is no way you feel it as though slowing down the momentum. Cinematography and editing are neatly done.
Vijay Antony underplays thoroughly in the movie, where he doesn’t exaggerate or over react anywhere. He keeps up the show with decent effort. He expresses his emotional prominence with a much greater impact. Satna Titus gets a decorous characterization, where she creates emotional impact and hope she continues to appear in such roles. The others in the cast have been offered a much prominent scope. Bagavathi Perumal appearing as Vijay Antony’s friend has something beyond his usual style of delivering humour.
1. Basic plot and screenplay
2. Star-cast and performances
3. Decent package of entertainment elements
What doesn’t work?
1. Nothing much to mention about
2. Action sequences seem to be intentionally inserted for mass appeal.
On the whole, Pichaikkaran delivers a promising show with a package of ingredients that will surely impress the universal audiences. With mother-son sentiment set as the major backdrop, Sasi gets into the process of focusing on serious issues faced by beggars in real life.
Verdict : Heart-touching tale with right dose of entertainment elements.
