As the year began, the embarkation of many films and so many incidents has created a surprise, excitement and some shock to the industry. Let us have a sneak peek into the January 2014 filled with important releases, incidents, reunions and lots more.

Box Office entry and dismissals

Namma Gramam was the first release of this season that followed by Agadam, Kathiyaai Theetadhe Bhudiyai Theetu, Aththimalai Muthupandi, En Kadhal Pudhithu, Mun Anthi Saaral. On January 10, there were couple of big tickets – Vijay’s Jilla and Ajith Kumar’s Veeram hitting screens. Then there was Vidiyum Varai Pesu, Kalavaram on Pongal (January 14). What came as a surprise was Vijay Milton’s Goli Soda. The film opened with fewer expectations and turned to be a surprise hit in the box office. The same Friday had Malayalam super hit movie 22 Female Kotayam remade as 22 Malini Palayamkottai hitting screens on January 24 along with Ner Ethir. Salman Khan’s Jai Ho was also released, which had a great opening. Mahesh Babu’s Telugu movie Nenokadine:1 was a mediocre hit. As the month came to an end, it was a little disappointment as none among the four releases – Rummy, Inga Enna Solluthu, Ninaitathu Yaaro and Ninaivil Nindraval were below average flicks.


January had a lot of special news about the marriages. First it was ‘Raattinam’ fame Swathy, who entered wedlock with her Malayalam movie Holy Shit co-star.

Oscar award winning movie Life of Pi fame Shravanthi married Sameer Bharat Ram.

Hot and gorgeous Sameera Reddy of ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’ fame married her close friend Akshay Varde on January 20, 2014

Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil, son of veteran filmmaker Faasil (Kadhalukku Mariyaadhai fame) made an official announcement on marrying Nazriya Nazim.


Telugu and Tamil actor Udhay Kiran committed suicide.Veteran singer K.P. Udhayabhanu passed away at the age of 77… Another shock came with the demise of Legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, who passed away at Kolkata hospital. The most adorable personality of Indian Cinema - Akkineni Nageswara Rao passed away after his private battle with cancer at 91. Legendary Tamil Actress Anjali Devi suffered prolonged illness and gave up her life.

Events and Incidents

A.R. Rahman recieves his 5th Honorary Doctorate.. He received Doctor of Music Degree from Royal Conservatoire of Scotland" felicitates A.R. Rahman with 5th Honorary Doctorate. Preceding back to few days, it is Vairamuthu and Yuvan Shankar Raja coming together for Seenu Ramasamy’s project. What turned the complete spotlight on Kodambakkam was Silambarasan and Nayantara coming together for Pandiraj’s ‘Idhu Namma Aalu’.

After several considerations and buzzes, Kamal Hassan was finalised the role of ‘George Kutty’ in the remake of Mohanlal’s Malayalam movie ‘Drishyam’.

Kamal Hassan bought more honour to the Tamil industry with the felicitation of Padma Bhushan. Along with him others were Vidya Balan, Paresh Rawal and cinematographer Santhosh Sivan.

Bringing the fame across the globe to Tamil cinema, Dhanush made us yet again proud by winning Filmfare ‘Best Debut Male Award’ for his outstanding performance in ‘Raanjhanna’.
