When we met director Pandiraj on the sets of Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga, he was prodding Bindu Madhavi to exude anger on Vimal who was, perhaps, pursuing her in an attempt to make her fall in love with him. He refreshed himself for the interview soon after this shot and here we go…

You moved towards comedy all of a sudden… wont you lose your identity?

When audiences see this film they will wonder if it is the same director who had directed films like Pasanga and Marina. I’ve included so many commercial aspects in Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga. Without infusing localism and realism, I’ve tried out something new in this film. I like Charlie Chaplin very much and some scenes have been inspired by him. My desire is to try out something new always. In fact, there are too many aspects about children’s life that have not been dealt with and I want to make it as a film. Also, I want to direct a film based completely on animals. Apart from this, there are too many other dreams within me and I am sure that I’ll find an outlet for all that through my films.

What’s your message through this film?

When I told my dad that I wanted to foray into films and make it my career, he looked at me as if I was going to tread into a whole new world. That was because he couldn’t understand what I was trying to do and what my aim was. My dad wanted me to look after my brother’s cycle shop because according to his point of view that was the right thing for me to do. Had I heeded to his wish, I wouldn’t have made it big in a career of my choice. Therefore, it is up to us to choose what we think is right for us. I am going to register all these issues apart from some great moments that I shared with my friends in my films. But when you see this in my films, you’ll realize that it had happened in your life too.

Vimal-Bindu Madhavi and Siva Karthikeyan-Regina – which of these two pairs will have more importance?

I was never confused with these two heroines because both of them have been introduced by me. Therefore, it is 50-50! In short, they will score equal points when on a weighing scale and am sure about that. I needn’t say anything about Bindu Madhavi because she has proved that she is a good performer. Regina has not had the opportunity to prove herself till now… To start with, Vimal and Siva Karthikeyan were in the same boat but the director’s brought out the talents of the actors and they proved their mettle. The same will apply to Regina, I am sure. Even the small characters in the film have been given importance. Importantly, there are not just two pairs in this flick but there are two friends, two families, two comedians… and likewise the film will also turn out to be double hit!

Working as director and producer should be very difficult…

That is what makes it very convenient for me. The producers that I had worked with in my first two films gave me complete independence but not all producers are alike. When a director goes to narrate script to a producer, it the assistants who create a ruckus while the producer will remain calm. The producer’s assistants will come up with several objections to the script and will ask for too many changes. All this will take its toll on the director when the film is ready for release. In order to do away with all this, I have decided to produce the film myself though I was scared doing it initially. However, I am confident about its success as a producer. But don’t think that I will be producing only my films.

The director signs off saying that he plans to produce films, directed by newbies, after completing Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga.
