While Tamil Cinema is experimenting with different genres, comedy has taken a back seat as exceptional themes have become order of the day. Thanks to director Rajesh for keep everyone cheerful with his rib-tickling entertainers. His films have always earned repeat audiences and that was blatantly evident with Siva Manasula Sakthi and Boss Engira Baskaran. Here comes Oru Kal Oru Kannadi to complete his hat-trick spell. The director has made it happen in every frame keeping the audiences engrossed with fun, fun and only fun.
Saravanan (Udhayanidhi Stalin) and Parthasaarathy (Santhanam) are close buddies working in Sathyam Cinemas. It’s falling in love at first sight with Meera (Hansika Motwani), but she doesn’t reciprocate as she doesn’t find anything interesting in him. What unfolds next is how Saravanan manages to win the heart of Meera with the help of his friend Parthasaarathy forms crux of the story.
Although the story is so much tenuous, it’s the continuous flow of humorous elements by Udhayanidhi and Santhanam that keeps us completely in splits from beginning till end. Hansika Motwani doesn’t get much scope to perform except few scenes. Watch out for her encounters with Udhay and Santhanam in flight and the scene where she is humiliated by her fiancé; she excels to the core.
Udhayanidhi need special mention for his selection of script and his characterization as an ordinary youngster. His realistic approach to the skin of Saravanan wins appreciations and Santhanam is just over the top as he carries the entire film on his shoulders. The comedy king keeps going with high-flying non-stop treat.
On the flip side, we don’t find anything much to bring up, except the length of this film, but it doesn’t become a hurdle in any way for the momentum.
Harris Jayaraj’s score is good, especially the song Venaam Macha stands out as a special treat for everyone. But the background score could have been better in places.
On the whole, Oru Kal Oru Kannadi is sure-footed black horse in box office for this summer and it’s a wholesome family entertainer.
What works: Everything
What doesn’t work: Little Lengthy, flimsy first half, background score
Verdict: Don’t miss it
