Tamil film industry doesn’t run short off stories based on ‘Politics-Corruption’. Last Friday, we had S.A. Chandrasekhar’s ‘Sattapadi Kutram’ based on similar concept. Now ‘Appavi’ comes out as a repetition of same theme made with a bunch of newcomers.

The film is produced by V.L. Thandapani under the banner of Devi Visions while Raghuraj has handled story, screenplay and direction. Newcomer Gautham and Suhani have performed lead roles with K. Bhagyaraj having an important character.

‘Appavi’ revolves around a youngster Bharathi (Gautham), a college student who is involved in rooting out evil persons involved in corruption. The mysterious murders create panic in the city and leaves police to run on the trails of the murderer. Bharathi’s absolute target becomes Sungani Saamy (Mahadevan) and hatches plans to bump him off. In a clichéd way, his daughter Ramya (Suhani) falls in love with him.

What unfolds next is a predictable storyline of how the protagonist accomplishes with his mission.

A theme like this always received well by mass audiences. Debutant Raghuraj tries adding some engrossing elements in the screenplay. But at last when we have the reason revealed, it becomes a potboiler.

Newcomer Gautham tries spelling decent efforts and does justice to his role
. Suri (Vennila Kabadi Kulu, Naan Mahaan Alla) evokes laughter at certain points with his comedy tracks. Suhani is merely used for glam-quotients while Mahadevan as a baddie deserves appreciations. Sampath, Manobala and K. Bhagyaraj are okay.

Songs by Joshua Sridhar is passable and the background score enhances the grip over few situations. Krishnaswamy’s cinematography is appreciable.

Though there are some considerably good quotients, the clichéd sequences that we have seen numerous times makes ‘Appavi’ a tedious movie.

What works: Performance, Music, Cinematography

What doesn’t work: Suhani, time-worn concept and boring scenes.

Verdict: Average
