    Aval Peyar Tamilarasi

Exotic crossroads, guy-n-gal in love, rustic characters deteriorating their relationships that finally ends on a heart-wrenching note. These traits defined the nativity based films that have been churned out so far in Tamil film industry.

Kudos to debutant Meera Kadhiravan! He has strived apart from such well-worn attributes. ‘Aval Peyar Tamizharasi’ reminiscences the traces of certain yesteryear films, but has an unparalleled storyline and course of narration. In simple terms, ‘Aval Peyar Tamizharasi’ stands out as an emotional drama of love between pals that is traversed with few hurdles and a convincing end.

The film opens with an introductory note rendered by Parthiban about desolated Jyothi (Jai) getting back to his hometown in search of Thamizharasi (Nandagi). The story shifts back to nostalgic memories of Jyothi and his Paradisal days with Thamizharasi, who belongs to an underprivileged family that performs ancient art of puppetry for their livelihood.

Jyothi requests his grandfather (ace writer Theodre Bhaskaran) to support the family as he’s so fond of Thamizh. All is well until Thamizh stands out with distinction grade in her 12th grade while Jyothi fails terribly. Unable to lead his days without Thamizh, who gets scholarship in Pune engineering college, he perpetrates a shockingly stupid act that deteriorates everything.

Rest of the story shifts back-and-forth as Jyothi embarks his pursuit of Thamizh from remote villages of Tamil Nadu towards Maharashtra….

We must really appreciate Jai’s consistency over choosing scripts. No matter how his films performed at box office, but just glimpsing on his characterizations in each movie gives a brief idea about his brilliancy in picking right one.

With an unstrained gesture, Jai steals the show as a young immature guy and later as a regretting soul. Mark our words! Nandagi is sure to bag the best accolades.
She has inherited the depth of her characterization and executed it well on every shot. Just take a look over her actions of marking beard to the caricature on King on Jai’s arrival during climax. Her silence over the most crucial situations is yet another highlight trait to praise about. It really makes us wonder how come Theodre Bhaskaran was unnoticed for such a very long time.

Meera Kadhiravan has narrated a poignant love story in the backdrops of culminating scenario of ancient arts. Though, the story shoots the lines on man’s quest, the portrayal of artist’s misfortunate lives have been perfectly showcased. At the point of intermission, the tale may look to be slightly scattered away from what it should be. But then, Nandagi’s convincing assertion draws sympathy.

Musical score by Vijay Anthony is pleasing and he could’ve worked yet more finer on background score. Couple of songs tends to be feet-tapping numbers and have been pictured well. But Meera Kadhiravan could’ve established an exquisite locales rather than usual spots.

On the flip side, the narration seems to be slightly slow-paced during second half, but the shorter duration of 128mins is perfect enough to keeps everything intact.

Meera Kadhiravan carves a niche as a proficient filmmaker, presenting a feel-good love story with crispness. The film is a sure-footed winner amongst ‘B’ and ‘C’ centres while word of mouth promotions may attract the multiplex audiences in weeks to come.

    Verdict: Don’t miss it…

What works: Overall performances, interesting narration, music….

    What doesn’t work: P.G. Muthaiah’s minimal involvement (could’ve been utilized more)…..
