Kutty
Thursday January 21, 2010

Any guesses why most of the remakes don’t take on well? Precisely, it’s because of ‘nativity’ factors. ‘Aarya’ can be regarded as an excellent breezy romantic entertainer, but remaking it after 4 years of time isn’t a better idea.
Nothing to blame on the star-casts: Dhanush shows-up with a pleasant charisma unlike his previous films where he delivered ferocious outbreaks against goons. ‘Kutty’ maybe an utterly passable film that can be hardly watched once with least laurels…
The blatant flaw is the jerry-built screenplay for the complete duration. Perhaps, for those who hadn’t watched the fine start of conflicts popping during first hour, it can kick-on interests.
When Arjun (Sameer), a spoilt brat is on edge-of-building to commit suicide, Geetha (Shriya Saran) has no options left other than accepting his love. But an unexpected twist strikes when Kutty (Dhanush) declares his love for Geetha. And now, it’s neither a one-sided nor triangular love story. Of course, there’s nothing much to lookout for a bigger conflict.
Two things that surpass Dhanush – his finely exquisite costume and underplay act makes him spotted better. Shriya Charan is okay and kudos to this girl for appearing in good costumes. But she staggers down with mismatching lip synchs from beginning till end. Shriya doesn’t emote exactly that’s required for the situation. New guy Sameer is a guy to watch out. Radha Ravi is okay and Vincent Ashokan shouldn’t have singled out this offer as it literally lowers his standard. Srinath and Mayilsamy add-up to humorous quotients.
Devi Sri Prasad’s musical score is a disappointment. None of the songs arrest your senses. Cinematography by Balasubramaniam is extraordinary and keeps you captivated even during tedious sequences.
On whole, ‘Kutty’ isn’t as best as the duo’s previous film ‘Yaaradi Nee Mohini’ and it could’ve been interestingly done.
What works: Dhanush, cinematography, Sameer
What didn’t work: Shriya Saran, sluggish screenplay, story that lacks interest…
Verdict: Not engaging
Producer: Gemini Film Circuit
Direction: Jawahar Mithran
Star-casts: Dhanush, Shriya Charan, Sameer, Vincent Ashokan, Mayilsamy and others.
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
